Apramycin is an aminoglycoside that is bactericidal against many gram-negative bacteria ( _E. coli_, Pseudomonas, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pasturella, _Treponema hyodysenteriae_, _Bordetella_ _bronchiseptica_ ), Staphylococcus and Mycoplasma. It prevents protein synthesis by susceptible bacteria, presumably by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit.
Ascorbic acid is used to prevent and treat scurvy in guinea pigs. It has been used as a urinary acidifier in small animals, but its efficacy is in question. Sodium ascorbate does not acidify the urine. In the past, it was used to treat copper-induced hepatopathy in dogs but this use has fallen into disfavor (see Contraindications below).
