Caffeine is a methylxanthine that acts as a non-selective adenosine receptor antagonist. It stimulates the respiratory center in the medulla, increases minute ventilation, and enhances diaphragmatic contractility. Also inhibits phosphodiesterase, increasing intracellular cAMP.
Neonatal respiratory stimulation (apnea of prematurity in neonatal puppies/kittens). Used off-label in veterinary neonatology.
