Esomeprazole is the S-enantiomer of omeprazole and a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It irreversibly inhibits H+/K+-ATPase on gastric parietal cells, blocking the final step of acid secretion. As the pure S-enantiomer, it may have slightly higher bioavailability than racemic omeprazole in some species.
Treatment of gastric/esophageal acid-related disorders: gastric ulcers, esophagitis, gastrinoma, ICU stress ulcer prophylaxis. Injectable form available for IV use when oral PPIs cannot be given.
