Promotes retention of the fluid in the vascular system through the exertion of oncotic pressure.
Prevents metabolization of ethylene glycol (antifreeze) or methanol to toxic metabolites. Also used to cleanse and de-grease skin. When treating ethylene glycol toxicity, adjust dose to maintain blood ethanol levels above 35 mg/dl in dogs. Monitor fluid and electrolyte balance during ethanol therapy. Unlikely to be effective if administered >8 hours after toxin ingestion. Fomepizole, if available, is safer than ethanol.
