Hypertonic saline (HS) rapidly expands intravascular volume by creating an osmotic gradient that draws water from the intracellular and interstitial spaces into the vascular compartment. 1 mL of 7.5% HS can expand plasma volume by ~7 mL. Also has beneficial immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects.
Emergency volume resuscitation in hypovolemic shock, traumatic brain injury (reduces intracranial pressure), refractory hypotension.
