Inhibits the actions of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction by binding competitively to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor on the post-junctional membrane.
Provision of neuromuscular blockade during anaesthesia. This may be to improve surgical access through muscle relaxation, facilitate positive pressure ventilation, or for intraocular surgery. Medium to long duration of action (>45 min), although there is marked variation between individuals. Can also have a modest stimulatory effect on the cardiovascular system, causing an increase in heart rate via a vagolytic effect.
