Secnidazole is a nitroimidazole antiprotozoal structurally related to metronidazole. It is reduced intracellularly by anaerobic organisms, producing cytotoxic free radicals that damage DNA and other cellular components. Has a significantly longer half-life than metronidazole, allowing single-dose treatment protocols.
Treatment of Giardia infections in dogs and cats. Advantage: single-dose or short-course treatment compared to multi-day metronidazole regimens.
