Antihistamine (H1-blocker). Cetirizine is the active metabolite of hydroxyzine. Almost all hydroxyzine in dogs is converted to cetirizine. Cetirizine is similar to other antihistamines—it acts by blocking the histamine type-1 (H1) receptor and suppressing inflammatory reactions caused by histamine. The H1 blockers have been used to control pruritus and skin inflammation, rhinorrhea, and airway inflammation. Cetirizine is used to treat and prevent allergic reactions in people. It is preferred over older drugs because it has fewer side effects. In dogs and cats it has been considered for pruritus therapy, allergic airway disease, rhinitis, and other allergic conditions. In cats, 1 mg/kg (5 mg/cat) has produced plasma concentrations considered effective. However, it was not effective in decreasing the inflammatory response in cats with hyper-responsive airways (experimentally induced asthma).
