IV lipid emulsion (ILE) acts as a 'lipid sink' that sequesters lipophilic toxins from target tissues (especially the heart and CNS), reducing their tissue concentrations. Also provides a metabolic fuel source for the myocardium, enhancing cardiac function during toxicosis. Key antidote for local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) and other lipophilic drug overdoses.
