Rapidly bactericidal (concentration-dependent mechanism) by disrupting the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria through its action as a cationic surface acting agent.
In veterinary medicine, piroxicam has been used to treat certain tumours expressing COX receptors, e.g. transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, prostatic carcinoma and colonic-rectal carcinoma and polyps. Piroxicam suppositories are available in the human field and may be useful in the management of colorectal polyps/neoplasia. Other NSAIDs are authorized for veterinary use in various inflammatory conditions but there is no information on the effect of these drugs in neoplastic conditions.
