Rifaximin is a semi-synthetic rifamycin derivative that inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis by binding to the beta-subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Minimally absorbed from the GI tract (<0.4%), acting primarily locally in the gut lumen.
Treatment of hepatic encephalopathy in dogs. Reduces ammonia-producing intestinal bacteria without systemic effects.
