Spinosad is a member of the spinosyns class of insecticides. These resemble tetracycline macrolides but are not antibacterial. Spinosad is a combination of spinosyn A and spinosyn D, derived from bacteria (Saccharopolyspora spinosa). The action of spinosad in fleas is activation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors but not other nicotinic receptors or GABA receptors. The actions in insects treated with spinosad are muscle contractions and tremors in motor neurons, paralysis, and flea death. It does not affect mammals because of differences in the suseptibility of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.
Spinosad is used as a monthly treatment for flea infestations. After administration, spinosad can kill fleas within 30 minutes and has complete kill within 4 hours.
