Sulfonamide antibacterial. Sulfonamides compete with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) for an enzyme that synthesizes dihydrofolic acid in bacteria. It is synergistic Sulfamethazine 723 S with trimethoprim. Bacteriostatic. Like other sulfonamides, it has a broad spectrum of activity, including gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria, and some protozoa. However, when used alone, resistance is common.
Sulfamethazine is used as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial to treat or prevent infections caused by susceptible organisms. Infections treated may include pneumonia, intestinal infections (especially coccidia), soft tissue infections and UTIs. However, resistance is common.
