Ammonium chloride is a urinary acidifier. When administered orally, it is absorbed from the GI tract and the ammonium ion is converted to urea in the liver, releasing hydrogen ions and chloride ions, which causes a metabolic acidosis and decreases urine pH.
Ammonium chloride is used as a urinary acidifier in dogs and cats. It may be used in the treatment and prevention of some types of uroliths (e.g., struvite) and to enhance the efficacy of certain antimicrobials that work better in acidic urine.
