Cephalosporin antibiotic. Action is similar to other beta-lactam antibiotics, which inhibit synthesis of bacterial cell wall leading to cell death. Not all third-generation cephalosporins are equal in acivity. Ceftazidime is a third-generation cephalosporin with activity against many gram- negative bacteria resistant to other drugs. Although it is not an FDA-approved drug for animals, it is used often in zoo, exotic, and companion animals because of its activity against many organisms that are resistant to other drugs. Its activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa distinguishes it from other cephalosporins.
