Binds ingested phosphate in the gut and the insoluble complexes are not absorbed.
Reduction of serum phosphate in azotaemia. Hyperphosphataemia is implicated in the progression of chronic renal failure. Phosphate-binding agents are usually only used if low phosphate diets are unsuccessful. Monitor serum phosphate levels at 10–14 day intervals and adjust dosage accordingly if trying to normalize serum concentrations. When using lanthanum carbonate octahydrate water should be available at all times.
