Levofloxacin is the L-enantiomer of ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibacterial. It inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, preventing DNA replication and transcription. Bactericidal with concentration-dependent killing. Broad spectrum including gram-positive, gram-negative, and some atypical bacteria.
Treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria when first-line antibiotics are inappropriate. Used off-label in veterinary medicine. Broader spectrum and better pharmacokinetics than older fluoroquinolones for some pathogens.
