Bactericidal antimicrobial which works by inhibiting the bacterial DNA gyrase enzyme, causing damage to the bacterial DNA. The fluoroquinolones work in a concentration-dependent manner.
Ideally fluoroquinolone use should be reserved for infections where culture and sensitivity testing predicts a clinical response and where first- and second-line antimicrobials would not be effective. Active against a wide range of Gram-negative organisms and also good to intermediate activity against Gram-positives (e.g. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Pasteurella, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa).
