Velagliflozin is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. Inhibits SGLT2 in the proximal renal tubule, reducing glucose reabsorption and causing glycosuria. SGLT1 transporters in the same region provide a safety net preventing hypoglycemia. Increased glucosuria achieves normoglycemia, which can promote pancreatic beta-cell recovery from glucotoxicity and restore endogenous insulin secretion.
