Bexagliflozin is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. SGLT2 is responsible for reabsorption of glucose from the renal glomerular filtrate. By inhibiting SGLT2, bexagliflozin reduces renal glucose reabsorption and lowers the renal threshold for glucose, increasing urinary glucose excretion (glycosuria). This achieves glycemic control without exogenous insulin, potentially allowing pancreatic beta-cell recovery from glucotoxicity.
Improvement of glycemic control in otherwise healthy cats with diabetes mellitus not previously treated with insulin. First oral antidiabetic and first SGLT2 inhibitor approved for any animal species (FDA December 2022).
