Acetic acid in the rumen lowers pH due to shifting ammonia to ammonium ions and reducing absorption. It may also slow the hydrolysis of urea.
Acetohydroxamic acid can be used in dogs as adjunctive therapy in some cases of recurrent urolithiasis or in the treatment of persistent urinary tract infections caused by the following bacteria: _E. coli_, _Klebsiella_, _Morganella_ _morganii_, _Staphylococci_ spp., and _Pseudomonas_ _aeruginosa_ . Adverse effects limit its usefulness.
