Bactericidal antimicrobial which works by inhibiting the bacterial DNA gyrase enzyme, causing damage to the bacterial DNA. The fluoroquinolones work in a concentration-dependent manner.
Ideally fluoroquinolone use should be reserved for infections where culture and sensitivity testing predicts a clinical response and where first- and second-line antimicrobials would not be effective. Fourth generation fluoroquinolone with broad-spectrum activity against a wide range of Gram-negative and some Gram-positive aerobes. Active against many ocular pathogens, including Staphylococcus spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
