Unclear but appears to be an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation.
Active against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Well absorbed following oral administration but is rapidly excreted in urine, thus therapeutic levels are not attained in serum or most tissues but are attained in the urinary tract. The concentration of nitrofurantoin is highest in alkaline urine. However, urine should not be alkalinized as the activity of nitrofurantoin is significantly decreased.
