Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the leading cause of death in geriatric cats. IRIS staging with substaging by proteinuria and blood pressure guides management. SDMA is a more sensitive early marker than creatinine. Dietary management (renal diets), phosphate binders, and blood pressure control are cornerstones of therapy.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is staged using IRIS guidelines (Stages 1-4) based on creatinine/SDMA and sub-staged by proteinuria (UPC) and blood pressure. Early detection via SDMA allows intervention before creatinine rises. Protein-losing nephropathy is overrepresented in Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers and Bernese Mountain Dogs.
