Reserpine depletes catecholamines (norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin) from peripheral and central nervous system storage vesicles by irreversibly inhibiting the vesicular monoamine transporter (VMAT2). This leads to reduced sympathetic outflow and vasodilation.
Primarily used in horses for treatment of laminitis-associated hypertension and digital vasospasm. Rarely used in small animals.
