S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is an endogenous molecule synthesized by cells throughout the body and is a component of several biochemical pathways. SAMe is especially important in hepatocytes because of their central role in metabolism. Supplementation with SAMe may also improve signs of age-related mental decline in dogs. In humans, antidepressant effects of SAMe are also documented.
Adjunctive treatment for liver disease, especially for acute hepatotoxin-induced liver disease. SAMe has been shown to increase hepatic glutathione levels; a potent antioxidant which protects hepatocytes from toxins and death. Can also be used in patients on long-term therapy with potentially hepatotoxic drugs. SAMe may improve bile flow in cats. May be used to improve cognitive function in aging dogs.
