Nonspecific beta-receptor (Beta1 and Beta2) adrenergic blocker (Class II antiarrhythmic). Action is similar to propranolol (one-third potency); however, its beneficial effect may be caused more by the other antiarrhythmic effects. In addition to being a Class II antiarrhythmic drug, sotalol may have some Class III (potassium- channel–blocking) activity. The Class III activity prolongs the refractory period by decreasing potassium conduction in delayed rectifier currents. Sotalol is indicated for control of refractory ventricular arrhythmias. It has also been used for refractory atrial fibrillation.
