Antiparasitic. Microfilaricide for heartworm prevention in dogs and cats. Selamectin is a semisynthetic avermectin. Avermectins (ivermectin-like drugs) and milbemycins (milbemycin, doramectin, and moxidectin) are macrocyclic lactones. Avermectins and macrocyclic lactones share similarities, including mechanism of action. These drugs are neurotoxic to parasites by potentiating glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in parasites. Selamectin is approved for prevention of heartworms; control of fleas, mites, and ticks in dogs; and prevention of heartworms, control of fleas, mites, hookworms, and roundworms in cats.
