Trimethoprim-sulfonamide is a synergistic antibacterial combination. Sulfonamides inhibit dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), while trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). Together they sequentially block two steps in bacterial folate synthesis, producing bactericidal activity at standard doses.
