Neutralizes gastric hydrochloric acid. May also bind bile acids and pepsin and stimulate local prostaglandin (PGE-1) production. Also binds inorganic phosphate (PO43–) in the GI tract, making it unavailable for absorption.
Management of gastritis and gastric ulceration. In renal failure, to lower serum phosphate levels in cats and dogs with hyperphosphataemia. Frequent administration is necessary to prevent rebound acid secretion. Phosphate-binding agents are usually only used if low-phosphate diets are unsuccessful. Monitor serum phosphate levels at 10–14 day intervals and adjust dosage accordingly if trying to normalize serum concentrations.
