Diminishes the spread of focal neural discharges. Its action appears to be a stabilizing effect on synaptic junctions and it depresses motor areas of the cortex without depressing sensory areas.
Used to control most forms of epilepsy in humans. In dogs it is metabolized very rapidly so that high doses need to be given often, and is associated with hepatic toxicity; cats metabolize the drug very slowly and toxicity easily develops. These undesirable pharmacokinetic properties mean that the drug is not recommended for use in dogs and cats as there are alternative drugs with a better efficacy and fewer adverse effects.
