Potent glucocorticoid anti-inflammatory drug with potency of 18 times that of desamethasone. In patients with inflammatory airway diseases, glucocorticoids have potent anti-inflammatory effects on the bronchial mucosa. Glucocorticoids bind to receptors on cells and inhibit the transcription of genes for the production of mediators (cytokines, chemokines, adhesion molecules) involved in airway inflammation. A decrease in the synthesis of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and platelet-activating factor caused by glucocorticoids also may be important. Fluticasone is used as an inhaled (topical) corticosteroid for treatment of airway disease. Most of the use has been established for cats, but it also could be used for dogs, horses, or other animals in which a special adapter can be used to deliver the drug via a metered-dose inhaler. In dogs and cats the most common use is for inflammatory airway diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, or bronchospasm. For example, if a cat is given 2 puffs twice a day of a potent inhaled corticosteroid (e.g., budesonide, fluticasone) and allowed 5-7 breaths (10 sec) from a chamber (spacer), it may reduce the need for oral prednisolone in cats with feline asthma.
