Stimulates the secretion of growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) from the hypothalamus.
To assess the pituitary’s ability to produce growth hormone (GH). The dose required to elicit a response has not been well established in dogs and not at all in other veterinary species. Specialist texts should be consulted if attempting a clonidine stimulation test. Assessment of plasma insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentration in a single sample is a useful screening test for growth hormone disorders. Also used in dogs to control panic responses and high arousal frustration responses.
